Ladi6 releases te reo Māori waiata, 'Whāia Te Māramatanga/Walk Right Up'

Ladi6 is honoured to revive her 2008 single 'Walk Right Up', translated in te reo Māori and released today in celebration of Waiata Anthems Week 2022.

'Whāia Te Māramatanga/Walk Right Up', along with Waiata Anthems Week 2022, honours 50 years since the Māori Language Petition was presented to parliament, calling for active recognition of te reo Māori (Māori language) in Aotearoa.

This year, Waiata Anthems will build on the legacy of the 1972 Petition with 20 new waiata set for release, along with a wero to Aotearoa to take part in becoming champions of te reo via waiata throughout Mahuru Māori.

Since its inception in 2019, the Waiata Anthems movement has supported the production and release of 100 new waiata. It has been instrumental in the massive ground swell of streaming and broadcast of waiata reo Māori.

“Fifty years ago, it was unthinkable that waiata reo Māori could reach the hearts and minds, radios, phones and devices of so many. Today as a nation, we can reflect on our past and look to a bright future where te reo Māori in popular music is accessible to everybody.

“We hope these waiata become the soundtrack to our daily lives - a way to celebrate the big and small moments,” says Waiata Anthems co-founder Dame Hinewehi.

“To be able to participate in Waiata anthems as a Samoan who has spent her life growing up in Aotearoa feels like a circle complete. To honour tangata whenua in this way and feel connected to Te ao Māori through reo Māori feels significant and important to me and an encouragement to all people of Aotearoa. I feel an overwhelming sense of both pride and belonging to this country I love, and a bond to tangata Māori. It is a privilege and opportunity I am so honoured to be a part of.“ - LADI6

lyrics

Whāia rawa rā
tō ake ara
kia tutuki ai-ō hiahia
ō wawata katoa
kei te kapu o ō ringa

Te oranga, tonutanga
takahia te anamata
pupuritia tō mana motuhake
noho i te wairua pai anake
me mōhio rā ki ō tino hoa

Mēnā rawa ko te aroha ka mau-ro-a
Maiea ō tūmanako
paiheretia, kia pono ki tōu ngākau
me whakapono ki a koe
Kia puta kia ora kia itā, whāia
whāia, whāia e

CHORUS

Whāia rā te māramatanga
whanake ki mua
whanake ki mua
whanake ki mua

x2

Kia noho tahi tāua
o ngā kōrero ka wānanga
me pono me tika, tika tonu
kia mau te ihi te wehi, me te wana
e puta rā koe i te pōuri
ka puta ki te whei ao, ki te ao mārama
E aro ae tō mata ki a Tamanui e
ki a Tamanui e, ki a Tamanui e

BRIDGE

Wetekina atu, ko ngā here kino e
kei taka ki te hē, māku koe hei kawe
Wetekina atu, ko ngā here kino e
kei taka ki te hē, Hōake ki tua o āke āke
Wetekina atu, ko ngā here kino e
kei taka ki te hē, māku koe hei kawe
Wetekina atu, ko ngā here kino e
kei taka ki te hē, Hōake ra ki tua o āke āke, āke, āke
ki tua o āke āke, āke, āke
Ka toro au i a koe, ahakoa kei tawhiti
ka noho au ki a koe, e te tau e..

CHORUS

Whāia rā te māramatanga
whanake ki mua
whanake ki mua
whanake ki mua
Whāia rā te māramatanga
whanake ki mua
whanake ki mua
whanake ki mua e

Hōake?
